Abstrak

This study examines the relationship between Islamic boarding school institutions and social communities in building social harmony using Robert D. Putnam’s social capital framework and the concept of trust as a catalyst for social relations. Based on qualitative field research conducted at Darul Abror Islamic Boarding School in Watumas, Purwokerto, and its surrounding communities, this study aims to identify, analyze, and measure the role of trust in strengthening social capital between the pesantren and society. The study employs a qualitative case study approach through participant observation, in-depth interviews with pesantren authorities, community leaders, and local residents, as well as documentation techniques. The findings reveal that the social capital of the pesantren operates through three forms—bonding, bridging, and linking social capital—along with reciprocity practices that serve as the primary mechanisms for building social harmony. Public trust in the kiai and the pesantren institution functions as a catalyst that accelerates the circulation of social capital, minimizes social friction, and enables collective action across communities. The findings confirm that social harmony between pesantren and the community is not formed automatically, but rather through a continuous process of institutionalizing social capital. This study contributes to the development of social capital theory within the context of religious societies while also offering practical recommendations for managing pesantren-community relations in the modern era.
